Programme description

As part of the programme, students learn about the basics of geology - rocks, their mechanical and chemical properties - and discover which of these properties are useful for stonemasonry. They learn about traditional and modern methods of working stone, acquire knowledge of its use, restoration, planning and computer design of stone products. They will learn both manual and mechanical processing and how to choose the most suitable process, as this is crucial both from an economic point of view and in terms of achieving aesthetic effects. By learning the techniques and rules for designing sculptural objects, students develop a feeling for material and volume. When trying to integrate a new product into an older whole, they learn about the problem of installing and protecting stone. A special emphasis is placed on learning about and preserving stone heritage, so that students become familiar with the basic conservation principles and legal requirements of this field and learn about conservation and restoration measures on stone heritage in practise.
