Programme learning outcomes
Microbial contamination by mould is a recurring problem in the holdings of institutions that manage written records. Staff are then faced with the challenge of reliably confirming the presence of mould, eliminating the causes and decontaminating the contaminated records, while complying with the relevant health and safety regulations.
The course will familiarise students with the biological basis for the development of mould and the necessary growth parameters, and teach them how to identify mould using characteristic features and simple detection methods. They will be introduced to the basics of occupational health and safety in Germany and will learn about mould prevention, the correct procedure in the event of an accident and possible treatment methods for decontamination.
The theoretical principles taught are put into practice and can be adapted and applied to the situation. You will be able to distinguish between mould and conventional contamination, apply common testing methods correctly and interpret results more easily. By understanding the necessary growth parameters, development can be influenced and avoided in practice. The learner will understand the potential hazards to materials and people and will be able to apply occupational safety in practice in accordance with legislation.
