Programme description

A one-year taught Masters programme in the Discipline of Archaeology. The aim is to introduce graduate students to the fusion of landscape, landscape archaeology and heritage as a research and contemporary public resource. The programme provides a solid grounding in theory and practice, including public and community archaeology and heritage, based on a wide variety of case-studies, field classes and a field school. Approaches to cultural heritage values, protection, management and presentation form the central thread of the programme and modules in sustainability, rural futures and Environment Impact Assessment are shared with other programmes at the university. One module (online) involves a collaboration with the Heritage Resource Management programme at Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada. There is emphasis on fieldwork training and on providing a critical understanding of the policy infrastructure and toolkit of resources available, from archives to digital resources. Optional, foundation-level training is offered in  electronic survey and digital mapping, geophysical prospection and remote sensing, data-processing and geographical information systems. The programme is taught by staff in the discipline of Archaeology with expertise in archaeology, heritage and public archaeology, with support from visiting specialists from the private and public sectors, and is open to graduates in archaeology and other cognate subjects (e.g. heritage studies, history, anthropology, historical geography, etc)
