Programme description

With the programme, the student acquires fundamental transparent knowledge in the field of ancient political and cultural history, literature, philosophy, religion and mythology, everyday life and other areas of ancient material and spiritual culture. Special emphasis is placed on the Latin Middle Ages and Humanism and the reception of the Greco-Roman Culture from Renaissance to Modernity. By choosing "Latin Philology" or "Greek Philology", the student focuses on a thorough study of one of the two classical languages (the other is at a level of basic knowledge sufficient for independent use of resources and manuals). Greek and Roman literature and culture are equally represented in the programme. The student thus acquires a broad classical-humanistic education, a broad transparent knowledge in the field of antiquity, history, literature and culture, and specific philological competences: mastering one of the two classical languages with the ability to read difficult texts in the original language and an understanding of the history of the language and its influence in modern languages.

The graduate is familiar with the methods of philological analysis of texts and individual literary and professional works. Student acquires basic knowledge for independent work in the field of research, literary translation, journalism, publishing, archivistics and other fields that require thorough and accurate work with ancient texts and sources. Our graduate can also participate in work in related fields where knowledge of classical languages is indispensable: archaeology and museology, history, art history, linguistics and literary studies.

Description of quality assurance obligations of the programme / institution

The system of quality at the University of Ljubljana (UL) is founded on valid standards, regulations and recommendations from the authorities responsible for ensuring the quality of higher education on the national and international levels. In accordance with the established standards, systems of quality are based on a closed feedback loop, with clear processes of identifying objectives and priorities, planning measures and operation, implementing planned activities and monitoring and evaluating activities and measures implemented, including an assessment of the effects, which serves as input information for a new cycle of planning.

With the aim of monitoring and improving the quality of study programmes, regular self-evaluation is carried out for each active study programme. Self-evaluation of study programmes serves to ensure the quality of programme provision, and to monitor the current relevance and sustainability of the individual study programme.
